South Korean vehicle manufacturers became reliant on overseas markets to achieve growth in 2008, as domestic sales fell by 5.1% to 1.15mn units. According to BMI’s recently published South Korea Automotives Report, a 13% drop in sales in December alone suggested that government tax breaks and year-end sales incentives had little impact on spending decisions. The global nature of the automotive industry slowdown was reflected in a 5.7% decline in exports to 2.69mn units. South Korea’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy is forecasting a further 4.1% decline in exports in 2009, while BMI expects a similar sustained downturn for domestic sales, particularly if the economy suffers further from reduced export demand. We expect local sales to fall to around 1.06mn units in 2009.
The country’s largest manufacturer, Hyundai, relied on emerging markets for its growth in 2008. Its Eastern Europe, Middle East and Latin America sales were up by 19.5%, while in China and India, sales rose by 27.1% and 49.6%, respectively. For smaller carmakers unable to diversify away from the domestic slump, the picture was bleaker. Ssangyong Motor has filed for bankruptcy status, despite receiving a handout of US$45mn from Chinese parent Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC). The company’s sales fell by 30% year-on-year (y-o-y) in 2008.
Despite the market contraction and the risk to exports from the global slowdown, South Korea retains its third place in BMI’s Business Environment Ratings for the automotive industry in Asia Pacific on 64.2 of a possible 100. Historically poor labour relations weigh on the country’s overall rating, although longterm political and economic stability reduce the risk to returns. Free trade agreements add to South Korea’s sound regulatory environment, although there is room for improvement if a deal with the US can be ratified and negotiations with the EU prove fruitful.
While domestic manufacturers look overseas for growth, imported brands continue to perform well in South Korea. The German and Japanese dominance of the imported vehicle market continues. However, there has been a change in leadership of the imported brands, with Honda coming through from third in 2007 to take the lead in 2008 with a sales increase of almost 74% y-o-y. However, German manufacturers still account for three of the top five companies, as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen (which overtook its premium subsidiary Audi in 2008) claim a 33.68% share between them. Lexus dropped to fourth on the back of a 19.35% decline in sales. The results still show a continued focus on the luxury segment for overseas manufacturers, with three out of the top five brands competing in the premium segment.
Rankings and Competitive Landscapes by production and sales; market share and change on previous year; number of employees, ownership structure and year established. Also includes analysis of company expansion, export and investment strategies.
