Braun opens expanded production site in Hungary
Braun has officially opened an expanded production site in Gyöngyös, Hungary, after a one-and-a-half year expansion project. The EUR 12.7 million investment doubled the production area and the capacity of the site, thus enabling the manufacture of 100 million products per year to meet growing demands on the market.
Disposable blood lines, wound drainage systems, catheters and customised infusion sets are manufactured in the now 5,300m2 clean room area. The plant covers some 800 product types, and around 98 per cent of the devices are exported. Besides the growth in capacity and area, more than 100 new employees have been recruited to deal with the increased production volume. With its 755 employees, Gyöngyös is the largest location of Braun Hungary, which employs close to 2,000 people in the country.
Over the past few years, Braun has made substantial investments to modernise and expand production in Europe, and more recently in developing and emerging markets. Worth EUR 3.0 billion in total, this investment is aimed at adapting the company's production sites to country and regional requirements and improving supply at the local level. The Hungarian medical device market is the fourth largest in the Central and Eastern Europe region, and around half of the market is supplied by imports, which are increasingly being sourced from Western European countries. Espicom estimates that, by 2017, the Hungarian medical consumables market will be worth US$267.1 million, with CAGR of 8.2 per cent over a five-year perios.
