Children Work In Hazardous Conditions In Gold Mines, Says HRW

News: Children believed to be as young as eight years old are working in hazardous conditions in small-scale gold mines in Tanzania, warned international human rights organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW). A recently released report by the organisation highlights the dangers faced by children working in the mines. 'They risk injury, for example, when working in very deep unstable pits which sometimes collapse,' according to Juliane Kippenberg, a senior researcher for HRW (Voice of America). The children carry heavy loads and are exposed to toxic metal mercury while separating the gold from the ore.
