Competition Body To Rule On Freight Rates

News: The French competition regulator is to give its ruling regarding charges on French state-owned rail operator SNCF that it provided artificially low rates in the country's rail freight market in 2009, reports Lloyds Loading List. The verdict is expected to be issued before the end of 2012. Europe Cargo Rail (ECR), the French subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, claimed that SNCF's freight division, Fret SNCF, obstructed the development of competition in the domestic rail freight sector when the market opened up in early 2006 via a deliberate predatory pricing policy. The complaint was logged by ECR at the end of 2009.

SNCF operates 32,682km of railway track, of which 44.4% is electrified and 38% is double- or multiple-track, for passenger transport in France.
