Government Promises Funding For Kiel Canal

News: German transport minister Peter Ramsauer has vowed to carry out emergency repairs on the Kiel Canal at an accelerated pace. The canal is the most heavily used artificial waterway in the world and caters to the Port of Hamburg. This move by the government comes after vessels having a length of more than 125m have been barred from entering the canal for one week as a result of damage to the large lock gates. The minister also announced plans to launch tenders for the construction of the fifth lock at Brunsbuettel in Schleswig-Holstein, on the Elbe River on the North Sea side. This comes after the parliamentary budgetary committee announced that building costs have been raised by EUR65mn (US$84.2mn).
