Industry Ministry Pushes For More EV Charging Stations

News: The French industry ministry has asked municipalities to further push the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the country, Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg said. Demand for electric vehicles has started to increase in France, as people are concerned about rising fuel prices and the effects of climate change. Rebates of EUR7,000 (US$9,117) for the purchase of an EV and EUR4,000 (US$5,209) for a hybrid model have also encouraged sales of EVs in the country. France has 6,000 charging stations for EVs, and the government aims to increase it to 8,000 units by end-2013.

BMI View: Although the uptake of EVs and hybrid cars is higher in France than elsewhere in Europe, the market is still particularly small and total sales figures are low. BMI believes that the increased subsidies will provide a boost to sales, but not a significant increase.
