Jebel Ali Keeping Pace With Shipping Trends

The construction of a new container terminal at Jebel Ali in the UAE will help avoid over capacity at the port, which BMI currently forecasts will become an issue in 2014. The latest arrival of port equipment at the facility will cater for the world's largest container vessels, demonstrating Jebel Ali's ability to keep up with developing trends in the shipping industry. We believe that the new container terminal will ensure that the port retains its competitive advantage in a region where its rivals are vying to capture its market share.

The first four of 50 rail mounted gantry (RMG) cranes have arrived at Jebel Ali Port's new Container Terminal 3. A further four ship to shore (STS) quay cranes are also expected at the port in mid-December 2013. UAE-based port operator DP World's new terminal, due to open in 2014, will have a capacity of 4mn TEUs, will boast 19 quay cranes that will be installed alongside a 1,860m long and 17m deep quayside, which will allow the terminal to simultaneously handle four 18,000TEU container vessels, the world's largest in rotation.

The port of Jebel Ali's well-established role as the main transhipment hub on the Asia-Europe trade route and its continued ability to keep up with trends in the shipping industry will see the port exceed its current container throughput capacity of 15mn TEUs in 2014, when BMI is forecasting levels to reach 15.44mn TEUs. Jebel Ali's new Container Terminal 3 will be essential to ensure the port can handle the continued container throughput growth expected at the port. Over the medium term (2014-2018), we are forecasting container throughput levels to expand by 24%, an annual average increase of 5.9% y-o-y, to reach levels of 19.2mn TEUs in 2018.
