Khalifa Port Prepares To Open
News: UAE-based Khalifa Port has started preparing for its opening, scheduled for September 1 reports Khaleej Times. The transition from the Port of Mina Zayed to Khalifa is scheduled to be completed in six months, according to Abu Dhabi Terminals's CEO Martijn Van de Linde. Container terminals at Mina Zayed will be decommissioned in Q113 although general cargo will continue to be handled at the port for some years, Linde added. After the completion of container business transition, some facilities at Mina Zayed would be converted into cruise terminals to support the growing number of tourist arrivals on ocean liners.
The Port of Khalifa will take over the operations currently undertaken at Abu Dhabi's existing Port of Zayed. It is to be developed in five phases at an estimated cost of US$24bn and would be fully operational by 2030. The complete Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone project includes the construction of 23 buildings and associated structures.
