KPN To Expand Wi-Fi Network With Fon

News: Dutch telecoms operator KPN has entered into a partnership deal with Fon to deploy a network of Wi-Fi hotspots based on broadband routers of its subscribers. The routers would be capable of sending a second Wi-Fi signal, which will be available for KPN subscribers and Fon users. The deal will enable KPN subscribers to access Fon's international network of around 8mn hotspots. The new plan will significantly enhance the operator's already strong network of 1,500 public hotspots. KPN's expansion plan follows a similar plan by rival Ziggo.

BMI View: The expansion will help the operator cater to the rising demand for broadband services in the Netherlands. BMI estimates that there will be 8.32 mn broadband internet subscribers in 2013 and expects the total to rise 8.54 % by 2017 to 9.03 mn. During this period penetration will rise from 49.7 % to 53.4 %.
