Lock Workers Go On Strike

News: Unionised lock workers initiated strikes on several significant waterway canal systems in Germany on July 8, reports Platts, citing a spokesperson for union Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft ( Ver.di). The union initially planned to run the strikes through July 14, but these are likely to continue depending on the outcome of months-long efforts to reach a settlement between workers and the Federal Transport Ministry over planned cost-cutting reform of the country's aging waterway canal systems. The walkouts have halted barge traffic through the systems. Shipping from the Rhine through all key tributary and linking waterway canal systems in North Rhine-Westphalia has also been blocked.
