Merck Launches Praziquantel Donation Program


News: US drugmaker Merck & Co has launched the Praziquantel Donation Program 2013, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), to combat schistosomiasis in Sudan. Merck will donate 6mn Praziquantel tablets worth nearly SDG2.4mn (US$541.40) through the WHO. The WHO has listed Praziquantel as an essential drug and estimates that about 5.8mn people in Sudan (around 15% of the country's population) suffer from schistosomiasis. Under the donation campaign, around 1.6mn tablets will be distributed through 17 administrative units, while another 4.4mn tablets will be administered in schools in the Sudanese states of Khartoum, Gedarif, Kassala and North Kordofan.
