Mineral Exports Get Conflict-Free Certification

News: The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, a body representing 11 countries including Rwanda and the Democratic Republic Of Congo, has certified mineral exports at the Rutongo tin mine in Rwanda as conflict free. The certification aims to guard against conflict minerals being smuggled into the supply chain. The move comes in the wake of the US financial reform bill dubbed Dodd-Frank Act which contains a legislation requiring American companies that buy minerals from Congo and neighbouring countries to certify that the minerals purchased were not mined in conditions of armed conflict.
