Operations Halted At Toromocho Copper Mine For Three Days

News: Chinese resource development company Chinalco Mining halted ore extraction at the Toromocho copper mine in Peru for three days, according to Delia Morales, inspections director at the Peruvian environmental protection agency. The suspension over March 28-March 31 followed findings by the agency that the US$3.5bn mine was contaminating two lakes. The agency discovered arsenic toxic discharge in runoff from a tailings pile. The agency posted a video on the internet that showed yellowish water running down into the lakes. The company has stated that it is taking actions to restart operations at the mine as soon as possible (Associated Press).
