Plan To Discard Old Ships Ahead Of Schedule

News: A plan by the US Department of Transportation to remove old unwanted ships in the Bay Reserve Fleet in California is two years ahead of schedule, reports American Shipper. The Maritime Administration had announced plans in 2010 to remove 28 ships from the fleet by September 30. However, 36 ships from the fleet have been removed and three more are expected to be removed by end-2012. The Maritime Administration had revealed a plan in October 2009 to give contracts to prioritise the removal of the most hazardous ships from the bay and improve cleaning measures for the remaining. Out of 57 ships, 21 ships remain to be removed and the administration intends to remove all of them by October 2017. The Maritime Administration has sold 15 vessels for recycling in recent years.
