President Officially Opens Dam


News: South African President Jacob Zuma officially opened the 347mn m³ De Hoop dam in Sekhukhune, Limpopo. The bulk distribution system connected to the ZAR3.5bn (US$326.4mn) dam will ensure uninterrupted water supply to all Limpopo residents, according to Zuma (Engineering News). The dam will also serve the mining industry along the platinum belt. The construction on the dam began in 2007 under Phase 2 of the Olifants River Water Resources Development Project, aimed at fast-tracking growth and development across South Africa. Zuma also revealed that a pipeline for carrying water from Jane Furse to Lobethal was 70% complete. The pipeline will supply water to the villages of Ga-Mashabela, Diphagane, Ga-Phahla, Ga-Marishane, Tisane and Mamone. Another pipeline from Mooihoek to Tubatse, covering the villages of Mandagshoek, Mashabela, Ntsoaneng, Driekop and River Cross, was also 100% complete and is only awaiting an offtake agreement.
