Telefónica To Deploy 3,200 Base Stations By End-2012



News: The Mexican unit of Spanish telecoms incumbent Telefónica expects its network to grow 25% by end-2012 after the installation of 3,200 new 2G and 4G base stations. The operator's network provides coverage to 90% of the urban population and has the highest percentage of completed calls, CEO of Telefónica Juan Abellán claims. The operator currently has 2.4mn mobile broadband accesses and plans to continue with the network upgrade, Abellán said.

BMI View: The deployment of the new base stations will help the operator cater to the rising demand for mobile services in Mexico. BMI estimates that there will be 98.35mn mobile subscribers in 2012 and expects the total to rise 11.46% by 2016 to 109.61mn. During this period penetration will rise from 84.7% to 90.4%.
