Vitamin A Deficiency Causes 43,000 Child Deaths, Says Report


News: A report from Twaweza activist group in Tanzania has revealed that the country loses about 43,000 children and TZS700bn (USD417.92mn) in annual revenues from vitamin A deficiency. For every 1,000 children born in the country, 3.1 are born with neural tube defects (NTDs) due to a lack of folic acid, according to the report. Around 4.2mn children and 4.3mn women have iron deficiency in the country, the report states. Experts have called on the government to allow the consumption and cultivation of golden rice, a genetically engineered rice with high nutritional content.
