BMI's Executive Summary[TOP] Market Overview Since its independence from the erstwhile Czechoslovakia, the Republic of Slovakia has managed to establish a well-developed industrial base, of which the petrochemicals and chemicals industry forms one of the key segments. At present, the industry is at a stage of consolidation and privatisation – both of which are expected to improve the performance of the petrochemicals industry. However, acute scarcity of basic feedstock including crude oil and natural gas has resulted in notable escalation of the production costs for the industry, where as much as 80% of the energy needs of the country are sourced externally. The country also faces a risk of power shortage, as many power plants across the country are being shut down in line with the European Union's (EU) directives. Major players in the industry include Slovakiabased Slovnaft, Duslo, Chemosvit and Novacke Chemicke Zavody (NCHZ), Germany-based Degussa, Italy-based Bonazzi Group and France-based Rhodia. Industry Development The Slovakian government is intent on furthering trade relations with countries such as Ukraine and Finland, which is expected to make the petrochemicals and chemicals industry one of the beneficiaries in view of the anticipated trade deals. In line with the major restructuring that the industry is witnessing, Slovnaft reportedly plans to expand its ethylene and polyethylene (PE) capacities in Slovakia and establish large-scale facilities to serve this purpose. Business Environment Slovakia harbours a fairly competitive business environment, which is well supported by a firm financial and regulatory system. However, the country needs to overhaul its bureaucratic set-up, which is often characterised as slow and opaque. Industry Forecast With the country making greater efforts at aligning its industrial standards to EU directives, Slovakia's chemicals and petrochemicals industry is expected to benefit from the improvements in technological and procedural advancements being brought about by various firms. Further, with the infusion of greater foreign capital in the industry, the nation is set for major improvements in its processing facilities. |
