Executive Summary

BMI calculates Netherlands pharmaceutical expenditure to have been EUR5.90bn (US$8.68bn) in 2008. By 2013, we expect the total amount spent on prescription and OTC medicines to have reached a value of EUR6.83bn equating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.0%. In US dollar terms, however, as a result of the weakening euro, drug market expenditure will fall to US$8.65bn in 2013.

In BMI’s Business Environment Rankings for 2009, the Netherlands is ranked 8th out of the 9 Western European markets surveyed. Globally, the Netherlands is ranked in 15th position just below Australia and Italy, after falling two places in Q209.

BMI calculates per capita drug expenditure to have been US$529 in 2008.The Dutch pharmaceutical market should show strong growth over the forecast period due to high prices of new drugs, more patients with chronic illnesses and an ageing population. The strong growth is partly also due to the fact that the Netherlands has one of the lowest per capita drug expenditure figures in the region.

Pharmaceutical and healthcare sales are generally resistant to economic downturns. However, the ongoing global financial crisis has forced governments and consumers to re-evaluate how much they spend on medicines. With the effects of the credit crisis still unfurling BMI, believes that the growth in Dutch drug sales may decline over the next 12-18 months. The depreciation of the euro against the US dollar will work in favour of the pharmaceutical export sector, although the falling demand in other sluggish eurozone economies will dampen its growth.

In January 2009 it was reported that the Dutch government bailed out health institutions of the Netherlands by funding them approximately EUR73mn over the last decade. The fund went to 34 establishments including the Vijverdal psychiatric centre in Maastricht, which received around EUR9.5mn. The fund provided by the government is expected to be utilised for improving the conditions of health institutions in the Netherlands. BMI calculates healthcare expenditure in the Netherlands to have reached a value of US$83.0bn in2008. By 2013 we expect this to have reached a value of US$85.7bn.

In company news, Netherlands-based biotechnology company Pharming Group announced that, during 2008, its unaudited net loss increased to EUR26mn as compared to EUR21.4mn in 2007. During the same period, net cash from operating activities increased marginally by 0.92% year-on-year (y-o-y) to EUR21.9mn and revenues remained broadly the same at a level of EUR0.7mn.
