Slovakia’s pharmaceutical market will represent sound prospects for multinational pharmaceutical companies over the next five years. Despite relatively mediocre total sales of US$2.04bn in 2008, per capita spending has been strong, averaging double-digit growth over the past four years.
Following eurozone accession at the start of 2009 and in line with the global economic outlook, BMI has updated its forecast model with the latest macroeconomic variables. As a result, over the next five years, sales of pharmaceuticals, which include prescription drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, should increase from to US$2.60bn, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.96%. In local currency growth should be considerably stronger, with a CAGR of 8.15%.
The underdeveloped nature of the over-the-counter sector in Slovakia means that prescription drugs will remain the dominant sector. The market is showing a maturing trend in line with healthcare improvements, with the use of anti-infectives declining rapidly. The importance of cardiovascular treatments has decreased over the past five years. The major growth segment in future is likely to be antineoplastics, which should prosper on the back of increased per capita spending.
In terms of our Pharmaceutical Business Environment Rankings, Slovakia is placed in second position with the Central and Eastern Europe region for Q209. Strong market dynamics are boosted by relatively strong risk scores in terms of both the regulatory environment and economic and political climate. The country is viewed as generally complying with international requirements for approvals as well as intellectual property (IP) protection. Additionally, the alignment of procedures with EU legislation is a positive step towards a higher degree of transparency in pharmaceutical and healthcare legislation. Negative demographics factors prevent a higher score.
Debt remains a key concern in the Slovakian health system. The country's state-run hospitals registered a debt of EUR196.2mn (US$288.5mn) at the end of 2008, increasing by 1.2% year-on-year (y-o-y). The cabinet has approved a debt settlement plan which should be implemented in 2009. Debts will be paid with refundable financial aid, with a 15 year repayment plan.
Slovkia started introducing a new e-health system in early 2009, which is part of a project aimed at introducing tolls such as e-records and e-prescriptions. Expected benefits from the new system are due to be realised in the second half of 2010.
BMI’s Burden of Disease Database (BoDD) shows that Slovakia is among the healthiest countries in the region, with 15,302 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost to all diseases and injuries in 2008. Through to 2030 widespread improvements in care provisions should cause a significant decrease in this figure.
