BMI forecasts that Asia will boast some 38mn subscriptions by end-2012 - over half of the world’s WiMAX subscriber count. So which markets lead the field today, and why? South Korea and Japan have stolen an early lead on WiMAX, with the creation of next generation high-speed mobile data networks. But don’t jump to any early conclusions – we predict in our just published special report, The Future of WiMAX in Asia: Winners & Losers, that WiMAX will be less popular in South Korea than originally expected, and we explain why.

The Report then goes on to show where the really high growth opportunities for WiMAX lie - in developing markets which lack pre-existing cable or telephone networks: markets such as China, India and Pakistan, where WiMAX promises to be a key enabler of research, jobs, tele-medicine, tele-education and more.

BMI Asia WiMAX View

The Future of WiMAX in Asia: Winners & Losers illustrated the dizzying scale of the opportunity: for example, India encompasses 1.1bn people, but only 2mn fixed line broadband internet connections. Meanwhile, the most highly-educated and largest middle class of the developing world is burgeoning - and so is their demand for broadband services. Find out in the Report in which year the number of WiMAX subscriptions in India overtake those in South Korea.

Extracts from The Future of WiMAX in Asia: Winners ands Losers

And China? Will WiMAX become a major technology there – and if so, when? We explain why, in the world’s biggest market, WiMAX has unique political hurdles to clear, and why it must for the time being play second fiddle to China’s homegrown 3G mobile network technology, TD-SCDMA. Meantime, we survey the field of WiMAX trials being conducted nationwide, focusing on the largest of these being created in Beijing by China’s largest cellular radio mobile network operator, China Mobile.

The Report features case studies on Korea Telecom (the first carrier in the world to launch a commercial WiMAX service), and India’s major carriers, BSNL, Reliance, Tata and Bharti, who between them have already placed orders for WiMAX infrastructure worth over US$1bn.

Other high priority markets featured in The Future of WiMAX in Asia: Winners & Losers include Malaysia (where four operators have already been licensed), Pakistan (which has launched two commercial systems) and Taiwan. The Report also shows how, in the longer-term, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam will become significant WiMAX markets.

The Report also addresses the critical question: Is WiMAX the next cellular technology? With many now predicting that WiMAX will become the basis for the much talked about mobile internet, we look at whether the technology will complement or compete for this role with other next generation radio technologies, such as fourth generation cellular radio.

You can also count on the Report for BMI’s independent, country-comparative forecasts for the growth of internet users and broadband internet subscribers over a 5-year horizon to 2012 (covering China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam).

In addition, the business operating environment of these 12 leading markets are rated and ranked by BMI, according to the limits of potential return on investment, and the principal risks posed to realising potential returns.
