Emerging Europe Generics Producers: Where Are the Big Opportunities? provides competitive intelligence on almost 40 leading generics producers (see full list below) operating in 16 key markets: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine.
The Report highlights highlight opportunities for firms such as India’s Ranbaxy, which bought Terapia in 2006 and other Asian firms which are keen to enter this comparatively highly-priced generics market via acquisition-based strategies.
Emerging Europe Generics Producers: Where Are the Big Opportunities? also evaluates key industry trends and growth dynamics, and features BMI’s independent 5-year industry forecasts for each market to end-2012. Each of the 16 generics markets is also ranked according to the competitiveness of the regulatory and business operating environment, and growth potential of the generics segment over the 5-year forecast horizon.
The potential is impressive. BMI values the Emerging Europe generic drug sector at US$19.9bn in 2008, and we forecast 7% year-on-year growth for each of the next three years. The Report examines the key drivers of this solid growth (growing economies, ageing populations and the emergence of chronic diseases), and the opportunities arising for multinational and local generics producers alike in each market.
But growth potential is not uniform across the region. Russia, which accounts for one-third of the market, is by far the most attractive. However, high growth Bulgaria and Kazakhstan – which will both experience double-digit expansion in 2008 – are key markets to watch; in stark contrast to Hungary, where falling prices is a key constraint on growth.
Furthermore, there are risks. New market entrants to Russia and Central Asia must take care to assess opportunities given lax patent laws, which increase the industry’s vulnerability to unauthorised copies.
