The Report provides newly researched company profiles and competitive intelligence on over 50 leading OTC producers (see full list below) operating in 14 key markets: Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
There is great potential in the Asian market for regionally-based OTC manufacturers with strong marketing divisions, but growth rates and trends will be far from uniform across the region. We evaluate and forecast the impact in each state of the key OTC demand drivers; ageing populations, a lower reliance on traditional remedies, the switching of prescription drugs to OTC and increased patient responsibility for healthcare.
Asia Pacific's Leading OTC Medicine Markets features BMI's independent 5-year industry forecasts for each market to end-2012. Crucially, our long term views are founded upon our unique Business Environment Rating – a numerically-based risk-reward evaluation of the competitiveness of the regulatory and business operating environment for each of the 14 OTC markets; a vital tool for benchmarking both the rewards available in each state and the risks of market entry.
Rapid market expansion WILL occur. BMI forecasts that the Asian OTC market will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.02% over 2008-2012, with a total market value of US$52bn by 2012 – up from US$36bn in 2007. Moreover, while economic development is a key driver, it is the trends that this propels – a move away from traditional drugs, and government moves to contain healthcare costs – that will determine the rate of OTC market expansion.
'Chindia' will be the key market. Japan is currently the largest OTC market at US$11.02bn in 2007, but growth here will stagnate. The value of its market will be rapidly eclipsed by China and India, which between them will account for 47% of the Asian OTC market by 2012, with analgesics to remain the hottest products.
Furthermore, there are risks. The potential is there, but our forecasts are based on assumptions regarding market access and government health policies that are vulnerable to change. How companies manage these risks will depend on the opportunities available, their ability to build strategic relationships with key stakeholders, and the regional diversification strategies of their clients and competitors.
