The Report provides newly researched analysis and forecasts for the growth of all four VoIP technologies (carrier, consumer, business and mobile) in the Americas over 2008-2012. Our evaluation is supported by latest data on the market share of internet and mobile phone operators in 6 key states across the Americas.

The Report covers Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.

The Report's principal conclusion is that, with total users across Latin America rising to 277.7mn by 2012 (across all technologies) VoIP threatens to be a disruptive technology to existing mobile and fixed line operators. That said, its impact will be highly nuanced. Key adopters will be businesses able to exploit their existing broadband internet capacity. However, the extent to which business take up threatens the profitability of telecoms operators will depend on carriers' own ability to cut technology roll out and maintenance costs by carrying voice traffic on their own internet networks

VoIP In Americas: Opportunities & Challenges features BMI's independent 5-year industry forecasts for mobile and internet subscriber numbers for 6 Latin American markets to end-2012, supported by subscriber and market share data for all major mobile operators.

Key Conclusions:

Rapid VoIP market expansion WILL occur. Total VoIP users will increase from 67.8mn in 2008 to 277.7mn by 2012, with Brazil the key market, where there will be 68.4mn users by the end of our forecast period.

But the technology's adoption will depend on market dynamics. The optimum conditions for VoIP adoption are a combination of high levels of broadband access and high call charges. Crucially, VoIP costs will always undercut operator charges. Consequently, limiting take up in the consumer market – which we expect to increase to 114.8mn in Latin America by end-2012 (from 36.6mn in 2008) – will depend on the willingness and ability of network operators to cut charges and segment their market.

Mobile VoIP is the least threatening technology. The key threat posed by VoIP is to the fixed line residential and business markets. While we forecast that VoIP users over mobile telephony qill rise to over 900,'000 by 2012, this contains substantial downside risks as operators will have the technology and incentive to minimise VoIP competition on their own networks.
