We have introduced a number of structural changes to our latest update on Bahrain’s telecoms market. The changes include a reorganisation of the various sections of the report and the adoption of a new format for presenting the operator profiles. The Mobile Data section of the report includes new coverage of the development of mobile value-added services in Bahrain, as well as an overview of some of the sector’s recent contract wins. In this quarter, we have focused more attention on developing the mobile sections of our report, including the mobile operator profiles. In our next quarterly update, we plan to introduce considerable revisions to the fixed line and broadband sections of our report.
The most recent set of subscriber data for Bahrain’s mobile market as a whole relates to the third quarter of 2008. In Q308, Bahrain’s mobile subscriber market expanded by 4.4% q-o-q and 38% y-o-y. This helped to increase the total number of mobile subscribers to 1.338mn at the end of September. By this time, Bahrain’s mobile penetration rate had risen to 125%.
At the time of writing, the only Bahraini mobile operator that had published subscriber data for the final quarter of 2008 was Batelco. In Q408 Batelco reported a gain of 32,000 new customers. This represents growth of 4.7% for the three months to December. Based on these developments, we believe that the sector was generally on track to reach a total of 1.42mn mobile customers at the end of the year. If our estimate is correct, this would be equivalent to growth of just over 27% for the year and would mean that, by the end of 2008, Bahrain’s mobile penetration rate had surpassed 130%. Although this is indeed a high penetration rate, it is important to remember that the number of dual SIM owners in Bahrain is relatively high, as is, potentially, the level of inactivity among prepaid users.
One of the most significant developments for Bahrain’s mobile market in the past few months was the announcement, in January 2009, that Saudi Telecom Company (STC) had won Bahrain's third mobile network operating licence with a bid of BHD86.7mn (US$231mn). The arrival of STC to Bahrain’s mobile market brings to an end the duopoly of Batelco and Zain. According to reports, STC plans to launch its Bahraini operations in the second half of 2009 and aims to acquire a 20% market share in 10 years. The Saudi telecoms company has also committed itself to establishing a US$300mn venture capital fund in Bahrain that will nurture communications and IT companies in the region.
Bahrain has fallen to third place in BMI’s latest set of Business Environment Rankings for the Middle East. Although Bahrain’s composite score has risen in the current update, an even stronger performance from Saudi Arabia has meant that Bahrain has been knocked from its former second place slot. Bahrain’s stronger country risk score partly reflects our belief that Bahrain could emerge from the global economic slowdown in a relatively stronger position than some of its regional neighbours.
